MSR is a painter defined with an identity of extremes - The complexity of not only the world, but of herself, informs her work. Raised in Brooklyn, NY by Bangladeshi immigrants, she grappled with her personhood in ways most children of immigrants do. Traditional, familial, religious in stark opposition with the harsh and brutalist modernism of NYC. Rather than force some false sense of concrete singularity, MSR embraces ambiguity and uncertainty with her paintings. Bright and bold dreamscapes allure and entice, but under the surface of jagged brushstrokes, bleeding and dripping paint a darkness and narrative of mental turmoil emerge. The battle of identity and the inherent juxtapositions in herself are transcribed onto her canvas with a truly idiosyncratic, unconventional, symbolic and transcendent visual language.
